Haiti Education Mission
About HEM
The Haiti Education Mission (HEM) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was formed in 2009 and is supported by local Central New York churches and the Haitian grassroots organization FEED, a French acronym for “Fondation pour L’Épanouissement des Enfants Démunis” or “Foundation for the Development of Children in Need."
The HEM team is comprised mostly of retired teachers from Central New York, with the majority fluent in French and able to communicate directly with their Haitian partners in Paulette, Haiti.
The HEM Mission
The HEM Mission
HEM's mission is to support the educational, nutritional, and medical needs of the children and adults in the village of Paulette, Haiti. Working in cooperation with the Haitian grassroots organization FEED, HEM supports teacher training, adult literacy, student scholarships, and a yearly medical clinic to enhance the well-being of the community.

WHY HAITI
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere despite being only 90 minutes away from the United States by plane.
In Haiti, parents must pay for their children to attend school, so most children do not go beyond the 6th grade. And, many Haitian teachers only have a 10th-grade education. Further, in the village of Paulette, 2/3 of the adult population cannot read.
With most of HEM's members being retired teachers, and fluent in French, we were especially interested in supporting the Haitian school system. We can communicate directly with our partners in Haiti via the Internet and have traveled there to provide teacher training and educational support.
